Tomato Industry News
By Amelia Tucker
If you are planning on becoming a mega-producer of tomatoes, you might want to think twice.
The industry is taking a big hit due to numerous reasons.
First of all Safety. Because of increased safety measures there is an increased cost for workers protective gear. The government is also cracking down on the amount of the gas, Methyl Bromide, a fumigant, that is available for the industry to use.
Next, because so many tomatoes are available for less money as imported fruit, it is difficult to compete in the larger market. More rules about immigration workers mean not so many hands for picking. Paying higher wages for legal workers increases the bottom line for the industry.
What does this mean for the tomato industry overall?
Well, prices to the consumer have to be lower while your backend prices rise.
All the more reason to cut back if your dreams are huge and to buy LOCALLY if your own tomatoes didn’t grow as well as you had hoped.

Where can I buy about 100 cases of heirloom - or similarly tasting, sun-grown - tomatoes during the winter months. I need them in New York City and refuse to buy the available tasteless winter product.
Thanks for any help!
