Summer Rewind: Journey of Tomato Farmer’s Move

By Amelia Tucker

Moving is usually not the most relaxed time in anyone’s life.

When I successfully moved the entire farm from snowy Montana to balmy Nebraska this week, I thought things couldn’t get much better. I was wrong.

The local grocery store was one of small town gems that carried a little of a lot of things. What caught my eye were the pints of cherry tomatoes that were ruby red and perfectly ripe.

I mentioned to the checkout clerk that I already missed my tomatoes since it was so late in the season and she said these were locally grown! I actually am eating THIS year’s cherry tomatoes and writing my tomato blog! Let me tell you, it almost makes hauling part and parcel through snowy mountain passes worth it for these babies. Yum!

I am curious to see how the hardy seeds I brought with me will fare in the extended season down here. No more fighting snow in July and no more rushing to get started planting as early as possible due to the short growing season.

The local farmers assure me that this rich, rockless soil can be worked as early as March and as I can attest, tomatoes can be harvested into October!

I think I am in heaven.
