Two Cent Tomatoes

By Michelle Fabio

As a young boy walked by a farmer’s garden, he stopped to admire the tomatoes hanging beautifully on the vine.

“I’ll give you two pennies for that tomato,” said the boy pointing to one of the biggest, ripest, and reddest.

“Sorry,” said the farmer, “but I charge a dime for a big, ripe, red tomato like that.”

The young boy thought for a moment and scanned the vine. He spotted a smaller green one just below the ten cent model. He pointed to it and asked, “What about that one? Will you take my two pennies for that one?”

Charmed by the young boy’s clear love for tomatoes and innovative spirit, the farmer smiled and answered, “Sure, you can have that one for two cents.”

“Great,” said the boy, plopping the coins into the farmer’s open, waiting hand. “I’ll pick it up in a week.”
