The Five-Headed Tomato
By Michelle Fabio
Not all tomatoes are perfectly shaped and beauty contest worthy, something Alan Blomfield of South City, New Zealand can attest to.
The veteran gardener has 25 tomato growing seasons behind him, but he had never seen anything like the five-headed tomato he pulled out of his garden recently.
Even stranger is that the odd tomato appears to have really been four separate and distinct tomatoes all smashed into one and connected at the top.
Blomfield admits that that flower that preceded this unique tomato was “totally different” than the other flowers, but he had no idea just how different the fruit would end up being.
Blomfield has already eaten the tomato in question, but unfortunately, it’s interesting shape didn’t lead to a very interesting taste—Blomfield says that “[i]t wasn’t as nice as you would expect, a bit watery, not a lot of flavour to it.”
Perhaps this was one tomato that was best admired rather than eaten.
