Best Tomato Varieties for Containers
By Michelle Fabio
Maybe you would love to grow tomatoes but don’t have access to a plot of land that would be suitable. Well so long as you have room for a container and a sunny spot on your porch or balcony, you can have a fabulous container garden.
We recently talked about getting started in container gardening, but below you’ll find some more tomato varieties that would prosper in such an environment, as recommended by NJ.com.
For small varieties to be grown in 3- to 5-gallon pots:
Patio
Pixie
Small Fry
Sweet 100 Patio
Tiny Tim
Tumbling Tom
Saladette
Toy Boy
Stokesalaska
Gem State
Patio Prize
For even smaller containers, including baskets, NJ.com also recommends the “Florida Basket, “Floragold Basket,” and “Micro Tom,” which needs as little as four inches of soil to grow.
For medium to large container tomatoes, look for “Jetstar,” “Celebrity,” “Early Girl” and “Better Boy VFN.”
And if you also happen to be a fan of peppers like I am, looking for some companion plants at NJ.com’s Peppers and Tomatoes that grow well in containers.

Growing tomatoes in containers and pots can be great, but you must position them away from strong winds, allow full sun, also the right container and medium. Always use a premium potting mix and look for the red ticks on the bag in Australia.
You will need a well balanced fertilizer, I love to feed mine fish emulsion and liquid seaweed approximately every two weeks.
