NatureSweet’s Best Homegrown Tomato Challenge 2008

By Vanessa Richins

This is the biggest tomato growing contest of the year.

Indeed – 2 people will win $2,500, and runners up will get $250 for the tomato skill growing contest.

There is also a random drawing sweepstakes for $5000 (the sweepstakes “begins at 12:01 a.m., Eastern Time, June 30, 2008, and ends at 11:59 p.m., Eastern Time, September 30, 2008.”)

To enter, you can either fill out an entry slip (click on the Homegrown Challenge banner) at your local participating grocery produce section, or by bringing 3 large or 10 small home-grown tomatoes of the same variety to a location found in the following cities:

-Nashville, Tennessee Saturday, August 9
-St. Louis, Missouri Saturday, August 16
-Metro Denver, Colorado Saturday, August 23
-Sacramento, California Saturday, August 23
-Leominster, Massachusetts Saturday, September 6
-Grand Rapids, Michigan Saturday, September 13

There are press releases available on their website that tell the exact details for each location. There is only one entry per household.

How are they judged?

Per the website: “At NatureSweet, we always pick our tomatoes at perfection through allowing them to ripen on the vine,” said Bryant Ambelang, Chief Marketing Officer for NatureSweet. “Each harvest is carefully selected based on color, size and most importantly flavor and we determine the best tomatoes by Brix testing the fruit which measures the sugar content, a major flavor indicator.”{…} Entries will also be taste tested by a panel of local celebrity judges and all remaining tomatoes will be donated to an area food bank after the event.”

If you have the chance and live near one of the locations, be sure to take some of your beauties to be judged. It would be amazing if we had someone from Tomato Casual win.

Good luck!
