What’s Your Favorite Tomato Knife?

tomato-knifeBy Michelle Fabio

I recently read glowing review of the Chroma Type 301 F.A. Porsche Tomato Knife from Cook’s Den, which described it like this:

This is the most delicate knife in the Type 301 product line, with a forked tip intended for spearing the juicy slices of ripe tomatoes and placing them on plate or sandwich. The 301 alloy steel is very sharp and hard, so the tines of the fork are at risk of being damaged if overstressed.

This knife can be used for other kitchen work, but you’ll need to remember those tines will snap. It excels as a sandwich knife both for prepping the veggies and halving the sandwich cleanly without crushing the structure.

A knife that has “Porsche” in its name is probably an excellent quality knife, but it got me wondering:

Do you have a special knife you use to cut tomatoes?

Here at my house, we use knives with serrated edges, but we don’t have anything special like an actual tomato knife.

What about you? Do you have a favorite tomato knife?

I don’t have a “tomato knife” as such, but I do have a knife that I always use to cut tomatoes. :) It has a long, serrated blade that has never gone dull — I think that’s the main thing when slicing tomatoes…to always use a SHARP knife, no matter the type.

I never had a special tomato knife until last year. Mine is by Pampered Chef and is ultra-sharp and serrated. It’s amazing!

That Porsche knife is one sweet-looking knife.

My current tomato knife is by Zwilling J. A. Henckels and it is serrated and I love it. I haven’t tried the Porsche one, but I do own some of the other knives and they work wonderfully (very sharp & great balance). Though I am thinking of getting it as we practicaly have tomatoes every day at our house, I can always use another knife. And as with the 301 Porsche you have to clean and dry it after use, I always know where it will be…not like my current one, as my husband puts it in the dishwasher and he knows he can’t do that with the 301 Porsche.
