Green Tomato Cars
By Vanessa Richins
I love when tomatoes are used as a symbol of something good.
In London, England, a new private hire car service has opened shop – The Green Tomato Cars.
They offer an environmentally friendly alternative to a standard taxi ride.
Every car in their company is a Hybrid Toyota Prius. That doesn’t mean it will be more expensive though – they say it costs about the same as a regular taxi.
The car does have some emissions still, so, as Clean Technica explains “The Green Tomato Cars participates in double funding offsetting projects in order to reduce their carbon footprint even further both for their corporation and for their clients.”
Since I use Twitter so much, I am intrigued that you can book your cab by sending a direct message to their account with information like your last name, pick up date/time/address, destination, contact number, and payment method. I do think that would take at least a couple of direct messages – it’s a great amount of data to cram into 140 characters. You need to send them a message at least 30 minutes ahead of when you want to be picked up, you can have up to 4 people, and you need to make sure you get a confirmation number from them.
You can also learn about making your own driving experience a bit more green on their website . I didn’t know that you should drive away immediately if you start your car in the cold. They say that idling only wastes fuel and wears down the engine faster.
I think it would be great if there were services like this in the US. Have you heard of any?

Honestly…I personally don’t really go for the whole “carbon footprint” idea to the extreme that some do. But I do think it’s good to reduce car emissions if we can, even if it’s just to help put a little less stress on people’s lungs & the link(I have asthma, so I know stress

And we should do what we can within reason to be good to the world around us.
