Yes, tomatoes are spectacular indeed.
In addition to all the other health benefits they provide, a new study suggests that tomatoes could be a weight loss weapon.
It’s no secret that tomatoes should be part of a healthy diet already.
They’re full of vitamins, mineral, fiber and antioxidants. Tomatoes (especially when cooked) are a key source of lycopene, an antioxidant that has been shown to fight a number of health conditions. Tomatoes are also low in calories, a plus for any dieter.
However, the tomato may be poised to become a star in the weight loss world.
In this study, subjects were given a cream cheese sandwich. The bread was either plain white, fortified with carrots or fortified with tomatoes. The order was randomized to help ensure that the results weren’t biased. In the end, the tomato bread came out as the winner, making the test subjects feel more full and satisfied compared to the other sandwiches.
Further research will focus on whether eating tomatoes alters levels of appetite-regulating hormones, including ghrelin, explains the Daily Mail. A lower level of ghrelin makes us feel full.
Another possibility is just the fact that the tomatoes have fiber. This tends to fill you up. Your brain registers that you are full, so you eat less.
If you’re going for the full benefits, make sure to eat them cooked. More lycopene is available in this form.
This could prove to be very interesting indeed. I am trying to lose weight at the moment, so perhaps I should experiment with eating even more tomatoes. I hope it works!
