Can You Grow Tomatoes in Crushed Glass?

crushed-glassBy Michelle Fabio

Samuel Garrett McKee, a senior in the university of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, says yes, you can grow tomatoes in crushed glass — and he has has pounds of tomatoes to prove it.

McKee thought of using crushed glass as a hydroponic medium after seeing a demonstration that utilized gravel from a creek bed and nutrients.

McKee knew of a nearby recycling facility with piles of glass laying around, so he went and collected three five-gallon buckets for free and got to planting.

McKee planted tomatoes with and without glass, and although he hasn’t fully analyzed the results of his experiment, one thing is certain–one of the tomato plants grown in crushed glass yielded 30 tomatoes, more than any traditionally grown plant.
